I've been debating for a very long time about painting my two white pieces of furniture in the living room black. My style has always been somewhat eclectic so my tables are a real mix of styles. The above photo gives you the overall look. So.....I bring the question to you my blogger friends because I want conflicting answers just to add to my indecision ;-) So let's see what you think. Let's start with the oval table which was a thrift buy I repainted many years ago. (You can click on any picture to enlarge.) This shows it with the accompanying tables.
And here is a better close-up. To me it looks kind of too feminine with my large pieces.

And then there is this dresser from my childhood that serves as a sofa table/desk. Ignore the lack of decor on it--something to do about it being a launching pad for kitties bounding over the couch.....but lets not go there. This piece bothers me the most being white (antiqued actually). It looks way too feminine ever since we bought the large leather couch. Besides black, a subdued red would be another possible color choice.
Here are two very crude photoshopped pics of the desk in black and in red. I do want to mention that this room gets lots of light. My pictures always look darker due to the light coming in from the porch area. (I would be changing the chair cover to something more appropriate.)
OK, let's have your thoughts. To paint or not to paint--that is the question. I'll answer first: I'm leaning towards black. Now your turn. Confuse me!

I think the desk would look great in the red.
Oh red... look how great it works with the drapery, chair and flower in the painting on the wall!
Can't wait to see what you decide on and how it turns out.
Well, here are my thoughts - you ready? I think the touch of femininity is great in a room with big pieces or masculine furniture. As for the oval table, it would look great as is, or awesome in black. Or, what about a touch of red there, too. As for the sofa table I vote for red. It would 'pop' when you enter the room. And maybe it would be so bright the kitties wouldn't know what to do so they would stay off! Whatever you decide will be right, my friend. ~Adrienne~
RED, RED, RED! And not just because I love red but I do think it really pulls it all together with the drapes and even the red in the painting in the corner. As for the smaller table, I think it is fine white but if I were to paint it I would go with the black. I like the eclectic look. I am having a similar debate with a table in my living room. I feel like black has been my color of choice lately and I am afraid of over doing it myself.

Well I like the desk in black but that's because it looks like a very dark green on my computer and seems to go well. The red picks up the curtains and poppy? picture though. And the little table? Could you drape it in black first along with the desk to see what it all looks like together? Will it all look too dark and heavy?
I'm not sure which chair you're covering.
i think the oval table would look great in black, but the sofa table just says "red" to me. Of course, so many thngs say red to me that I don't know if you can rust that, lol, but I think the red shows better against the sofa:>)
I like the red. If you paint it black I think you'll have too much black.
Hi Lallee,
In my opinion the sofa table would look great RED!!! and I think the other table looks nice how it is :)
Looking forward to seeing your decision!
Tracey
definitely black!!! I had my husband apint my living room tables black a few years ago and he thought I was crazy...everyone loves them and so do I, still!
oops...paint! I shouldn't try to type too fast!
I'm with everyone else. I think the red is just the right amount of pop the room needs, otherwise it just blends in being black. And I think every room needs a little black for statement and to anchor a room. I actually think the chair should be black next to the sofa dresser with maybe a nice red & black patterned fabric. Something with a black background maybe a gold diaginal pattern with rooters. There's endless possiblities. As for the round table I'm clueless. Hope I've really got you mind swimming now, ha-ha. Good luck, it's already a beautiful room....Tracy
Black is always a nice accent but the red really pops! What a beautiful room!
Followed you over to here from Flickr... Love the desk. Like the red, but it has to be the right red/cranberrie or maybe a red with a glaze antique look to it.
Adding you to my blog list. This looks fun over here. Haven't read the TP one yet, but on my way there now.
Thanks - The Garden Bell
Love your eclectic taste friend...works great in the room! I like black for the oval table, but I'm torn on the sofa table. I love the idea of the pop of red to tie in the curtains and help move your eye around the room, but I love black too. One practical solution is to paint it red and see how you like it...you can always paint over the red with black...but it would be harder to paint red over black...
The main thing is to go with your gut and with what you love and that makes you smile when you walk in the room...then you can't go wrong!
Cheering you on - have fun!! Can't wait to see the reveal!
Hugs & Blessings,
Becky S.
I like black. Looking forward seeing what you choose.
I vote for black on the round table and red for the sofa table. I like how the red pops against the sofa.
Thanks for stopping by my blog to say hello! If you decide to make the pillow, I'd love to hear how it turns out!

PS- Your Etsy cupcakes are adorable :)
okay, let's play with this...
What about putting your white sofa table over there BETWEEN your two chairs and it can stay white or be black or be red AND moving the table that is currently between the armoire and chair (under the red floral painting) and use it AS the sofa table??? I think with chair flanking it the scale would be just right.
Aren't you glad you asked?
;-)
Love you Laura!!!
Have fun!
It will look awesome however you do it - I LOVE this room!!!! The layers are fabulous.
xo,
Kim
I love the pop of red against the dark sofa. Definately paint the dresser. Why not cover the round table with a table cloth. Then you could still use it white if you decide to.
Love it all as is but like the others, I could so see the soaf table in red. Wow what a pop.
I like Jean's tablecloth suggestion...so you don;t have to make the decision right now on the round table.
Your room is so lovely...and your taste and style is wonderful. I have no doubt you will make a great choice!
Hmmm... I think I like black but red would be nice.
I remember when my daughter was studying Interior Design, they talked about deep hunter green becoming a new neutral, too.
Poor thing, after her 4th child turned two a couple months ago, she has HAD to give up her white sofas. Everyone else loves her two new dark chocolate brown leather sofas.
First of all, your living room is lovely. The desk from your childhood should definitely be painted. I'm leaning toward the red. The oveal table should be left as it is. If you don't like it like that you can ship it to me!!!! It's georgeous!!! Tee Hee!
I think our Miss Kim has a good suggestion with moving the table under the red picture to the back of the sofa. It would bring up the hieght. I'd use the same lamp on it, too.
Now for the color....I like the RED. Go figure, huh? I think the red desk would be perfect with the red curtains. I like it red behind the sofa, too.
Geez.....can I just come over and play?
Maybe you could even put some red pillows on the couch for balance.

Well, I'm going to throw my two cents in here. If it were me...I would paint them slightly different colors, perhaps a shade or two difference of the same color, and I would pick a color from your area rugs. I wouldn't do either red or black because you have large pieces of that color that draw the eye. These are accessory pieces that, in my humble opinion, should be accessory colors that have enough variation as to not compete with the sofa and draperies. Perhaps inthe charcoal or grey tones, or perhaps in the taupe or gold tones, maybe with a darker trim color. Just a thought.
Good luck...I'm going through the same thing, but with painting the walls...cream, green, yellow...that is the question!

Hi Lallee
I am having a welcome fall party on Tuesday to celebrate the first day of fall and I'd love it if you'd join in. You can read about it on my blog.
Hugs, Rhondi
I can't wait to see what you come up with here! I was going to say red, but also like Kim's suggestions. I like the colors they are now, as well!
Katherine
I'm back, I just took a second look at the first picture. How about if you put that heavy table that is beside the armoire, behind the sofa and put the white piece beside the armoire, and leave it white, or give it a wash to tone it down a bit?
Katherine
For what it's worth...I like the red. Mimi
I think painting the desk black with the brass/gold hardware would look very classic.
our white side table would look good black also. The side table and chair to the right are a similar scale~it's the large comfy armchair (that I would love to read in!)is bigger.
I think your living room is gorgeous!

I wouldn't paint - it all looks great as it is !
House Beautiful! Oh to choose paint! I am the worst at choosing my own colors..... but someone elses? The oval must stay neutral - no black, too weighted. The behind the couch table must not be white - too airy! I don't care for red either - too decoratorish. I know you will choose the right shade, and I for one can't wait to see the end results! Decorating by proxy - what fun! E
I actually think that there is nothing wrong with the white table as if. Maybe it's from advocating clean, light designs at Furniture and Design Ideas all this time. But if I have to choose, I would go for red.
